This week I got back in touch with several long lost friends via facebook. A few friends from high school, a few from college, and a few who I met over the years on travel. It was great to peruse their photos, read their walls, and ultimately get a glimpse into their lives again. It was also a lot of fun to have them get a glimpse back into my life and to hear what they had to say.
I think perhaps the greatest value in creating Place is that it gives us the chance to feel connected. Connected to nature, to the past, to those around us. Physical places are arguably more powerful and more preferable, but within our complicated world they cannot always keep us connected with all the elements of our lives that make us who we are, that make us feel at Home within ourselves.
By reaching out to long-lost friends, I am reminded of times in my life that meant a great deal to me. We share our collected memories (stories, old pictures, poems, thoughts) and it makes me remember myself again, to feel truly rooted in this world, and to value the life I've been given. And ultimately that's what Place is all about.
